Photography in Buenos Aires

2 to 12 weeks
18 to 70

Limited spots. Earliest available arrival is currently Aug 2023, and closing very soon.

Trip overview

Learning photography is a skill set that transcends the technical. It is more than knowing about your equipment and how to use it, it is about developing your eye, about seeing the world in a completely different way. This course will teach you both. You will get a solid grounding in the technical, but encouragement and tutelage from skilled professors in how to develop yourself as a photographer, how to show the world through your eyes.

Whether your interests lie in portrait, street photography or telling a story with an image, there is hardly a better place to learn than the glamorous streets of Buenos Aires. You will join a group of international students in the cultural heart of Argentina to explore the incredible faded-glamour of Buenos Aires in a way that no other traveller will. Aside from the intensive classes you will attend during the day, there are several opportunities to explore the city by night with your professors at your side, discovering areas of beauty and intrigue that would otherwise be hidden from you.

Buenos Aires is effortlessly charming. As soon as you arrive in the city, you feel like you are home. The city is one of the safest in South America and by living and studying here you will get to know its streets, its enticing culture and its incredibly friendly locals. As a photographer, it is a dream subject. Its architecture is phenomenal, detailed and regal with a fading charm. Its people are friendly and open, which means their faces are an open book and there is more political graffiti than any other city in South America, an undercurrent of discontent that makes for some beautiful photos.

Be inspired by the cultural blend of Europe and South America that exists in Buenos Aires. Immerse yourself in its joys, make friends for life and bring home newfound skills and a completely different way of looking at things. Embark on an adventure to study the heart and soul of Argentina through the developing eye of a photographer. This is more than just visiting Argentina, this is living it.

Trip details

This intensive photography course is dedicated to changing the way you perceive the world, to get you thinking like a photographer every second of the day. The course is made up of a combination of group sessions, one-on-one sessions and innovative and exciting night sessions. The group work is where you will learn the fundamentals of both digital and analogue photography. Here you will learn how a camera works, how to pick lenses, use filters and get to know your equipment inside out. Then the one-on-ones are where your inner photographer really comes out to play.

This dedicated time with your expert tutor gives you the opportunity not only to sharpen up on those technical skills but brings in the element of being an artist. Your tutor will drill deep into what type of photographer you want to be, point out little details that you missed and help improve every single photograph that you take. This is a rare opportunity to get inside the head of a master photographer. Then there are the night sessions. Your tutor takes you out in small groups to hidden spots in Buenos Aires to photograph this endlessly photogenic city and its beautiful residents. Learning in the field like this, with a professional at your side is priceless.

You will arrive in Buenos Aires with the reassurance that you don’t have to do a thing, that we have taken care of the details, so you can focus entirely on your craft and absorb the beauty and history of the city. You’ll be staying right in the greatest areas of the city, either Palermo, Belgrano, Barrio Norte or Recoleta, each one bursting with character and packed with bars, restaurants and cultural experiences waiting to be discovered. Your school doesn’t just want you to have a great learning experience, they want you to fall in love with the city, so there are a host of evening activities lined up that will help you meet people, explore Buenos Aires and become a long-term lover of all things Argentina.

If you want to explore Argentina or even South America further, then you couldn’t be in a better spot. A short ferry ride and you are in the laid back loveliness of Uruguay, a country that should never be overlooked. You are close to Iguazu Falls, a must-see natural wonder and you are flights or long bus journeys away from the south coast of Brazil, a whole adventure in itself.

Taking photos is always great, but not everyone takes the steps to become a true photographer. This is your chance, and why not encapsulate Buenos Aires as your first project.

Be aged between 18-85.

What extra costs will I have?

Flights, travel insurance, souvenirs, vaccinations & spending money.

Trip itinerary

You will be collected from the airport and transferred to your accommodation. If you choose to, arrive a few days early to acclimatise and explore Buenos Aires before your classes start in earnest.

Your classes do not officially start until the afternoon each day, however many people choose to participate in Spanish lessons in the mornings even though they are an additional cost. This creates a much more authentic experience and helps you feel more part of the city. Buenos Aires is a beautiful city to become a part of and learning a bit of the language helps you to integrate into its ebb and flow.  Four days a week, your intensive photography lessons take place between 3-8 pm. During this time you will participate in group lessons, where you will cover the basics, the technical side of photography that everyone needs to know. Then come the one-to-one sessions, which is where you will begin to truly excel. Your professors are able to drill down into what makes you a photographer, polishing up the technical aspects that need work, but helping you to discover your own particular style and skillset. It is during these sessions that you will stop being someone who takes photos and develops into being a photographer.   In addition to these courses, you will be taken out to discover a side of Buenos Aires that hardly anyone gets to see. With your professors leading the way, you will be split into small groups and taken to spots around the city in the evening, to develop your style and get your creative mind working overtime. Not only great for your photography skills, but what a special way to see more of this incredibly photogenic city.  Then from 5-10 pm, our partners in Buenos Aires have arranged a whole series of cultural activities and city tours to get you to know the city much better and feel like you are becoming a true porteño (people of the port, the nickname for Buenos Aires residents). If your lessons and your cultural activities conflict, no problem, things can be rearranged to make sure you get the most out of this incredible cultural immersion.

What happens if COVID affects my trip?

If you have to make any changes to your departure date, you’re protected with our Lifetime Deposit Guarantee and our Ultimate Corona Booking Flexibility. With this, we will change your trip dates for free. If this doesn’t fit around you and you can’t go on your trip anymore, we will give you a 100% refund in the form of a Trip Credit with us (See terms). If you’re unable to use it, you can also transfer that credit to someone else for them to put towards any trip too.

If you’re affected by Covid-19 while you’re overseas, you will have all the support you need from our team or partners in-country as well as have access to our 24/7 Global Emergency Line. We recommend travellers purchase Global Travel Cover travel insurance that provides Covid-19 medical protection too.

Do I need to be vaccinated to book?

As border restrictions for countries begin to ease, being fully vaccinated will maximise the number of locations you can visit. So while you are not legally required to be vaccinated, and it’s also not a requirement to travel with us, it will limit some of the countries that you can visit and may make it harder to travel through over the next 12-18 months. We highly recommend our travellers look at the current travel restrictions of their destination, speak with a medical professional or get in touch with our team for travel advice.

What happens if I want to cancel my trip?

Our Ultimate Corona Booking Flexibility means you can change your trip’s start date up to 84* days before departure without incurring any charges when you rebook it for any time (or even any other trip) in the next 2 years from your original start date.

In the event that you want to cancel your booking altogether, if you give us over 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put towards booking absolutely anything travel related with your Travel Concierge within the next 2 years!

*Some select trips excluded, including Teach (Spain, Italy & Czech Republic) and USA (Summer Camp, Working Holiday and Hotel Professional), and others as listed in Booking Conditions.
