Our Elephant Conservation & Helping Local Farmers in Africa trip is designed to get you volunteering overseas in a safe and fun environment and with a genuine and rewarding purpose. Our expert team and local partners take care of everything you need to start making a positive impact, from volunteer placement, accommodation, meals and ongoing support throughout your entire journey.
You’ll spend most of your time volunteering in the northwestern regions of the Namib Desert, traditionally known as ‘Damaraland’.
Once you’ve touched down at either Walvis Bay Airport or Hosea Kutako International Airport, your pre-arranged transfer will take you straight to your initial accommodation in Swakopmund. Once you’ve arrived at the backpackers, you’ll head to your orientation and briefing with the other volunteers where you’ll learn more about your project and your volunteer schedule - your first week being construction and your second week consisting of patrol.
Following your night stay at the backpackers, you’ll be transferred to your volunteer site. You’ll set up at base camp, which has a treehouse and prepare to begin your volunteer project.
7.30am: Cheat the heat and wake up bright and early. Enjoy a cup of coffee around the campfire with the other volunteers. The team member on duty will serve breakfast. 8.30am: Head out to the project site for the day. 9.00am: Begin your first volunteer shift of the day once you arrive at the site. During construction week, your days will generally be spent focusing on building new water points for elephants, constructing protective walls around farm windmills and fixing a rural school or tourist camp. 12.00pm: Travel back to base camp for lunch. You could be tasked to update data forms or be on kitchen/camp duty for the day. 1.00pm: Once you’re well-fed, you’ll be ready to commence your second shift of the day. The second week is generally spent on elephant patrol. You’ll set out in a 4WD and spend the afternoon looking for elusive elephants. You may follow them by foot or sit patiently observing them and recording data while they laze away in the shade. 4.00pm: Return to camp and indulge in dinner with the crew. 6.00pm: Evenings are spent around the campfire, watching the sunset on the iconic Africa plains, eating and catching up on the day’s events. Weekends: At the end of each week, you'll return to Swakopmund to enjoy your weekends off. You’ll have the opportunity to relax, visit local sites, go on day tours and explore. Closeby activities include skydiving, quad biking or sandboarding through the dunes, dolphin watching, kayaking or visiting the local beach.

Yes! Almost all countries are now open and accepting tourists or work visa holders, with some requiring vaccination against Covid-19 and others not. But travel is very much back, and our team is fully staffed and ready to help navigate this exciting new adventure for you. We recommend our travellers book their trips at least 6-12 months in advance, so by the time you’re ready to depart we’re confident your destination (if it’s not already) will be open and ready to go.
If you have to make any changes to your departure date, you’re protected with our Lifetime Deposit Guarantee and our Ultimate Corona Booking Flexibility. With this, we will change your trip dates for free. If this doesn’t fit around you and you can’t go on your trip anymore, we will give you a 100% refund in the form of a Trip Credit with us (See terms). If you’re unable to use it, you can also transfer that credit to someone else for them to put towards any trip too.
If you’re affected by Covid-19 while you’re overseas, you will have all the support you need from our team or partners in-country as well as have access to our 24/7 Global Emergency Line. We recommend travellers purchase Global Travel Cover travel insurance that provides Covid-19 medical protection too.
As border restrictions for countries begin to ease, being fully vaccinated will maximise the number of locations you can visit. So while you are not legally required to be vaccinated, and it’s also not a requirement to travel with us, it will limit some of the countries that you can visit and may make it harder to travel through over the next 12-18 months. We highly recommend our travellers look at the current travel restrictions of their destination, speak with a medical professional or get in touch with our team for travel advice.
